- That depends on where you're asking from - I teach in Western Australia, and to practice we have to be registered with the W.A. College of Teaching (WACOT). S**T! thanks for reminding me - I HAVEN'T PAID MY ANNUAL FEES! :| Other Australian states have similar organisations, I believe - so I'm sure other nations must also.
- Are we talking unions here? It differs for every state, county, city, and district. Usually, unions are somewhat hierarchical. You answer to your district, your county, your state, and then the national level. Each level does something different for you. The American Federation of Teachers is the largest national organization (I believe). In Michigan, it depends on what side of the state you reside. Western Michigan is MEA (Michigan Education Association). East-siders are AFT. Were you asking about discipline specific organizations? Again, in Michigan we have the MCTE (Michigan Council of Teachers of English) a chapter of the NCTE. Also, there is the Michigan Council for Social Studies. The list is actually long. Search the internet. Start with the ones I mentioned above. That should get you started.
- NEA
- In California the largest union is the California Teachers Association. With about 200,000 teachers in the association it is a strong union. However, that said teachers like to think of themselves as professionals and think they are like managers and do not like to be unionized so do not support their union as much as they should. If teachers ever work together for their rights, and salaries they would be extremely powerful.
